Back to MTG Blogging

It's been quite some time since I last wrote something here. Going forward I will be blogging every deck that I will play this year regardless of the format I'll be playing with. It's a new year and I'm starting this MTG season with the archetype I'm most comfortable playing with right now which is MIDRANGE.

For this week I'm playing JUND MIDRANGE, for the ones that are not familiar with MTG Jund is a color combination of RED, GREEN, and BLACK. I've decided to play this list.

Deck

2 Brotherhood's End

2 Soul Transfer

3 Duress

4 Fable of the Mirror-Breaker // Reflection of Kiki-Jiki

2 Sheoldred, the Apocalypse

4 Titan of Industry

3 Abrade

2 Go for the Throat

4 The Cruelty of Gix

4 Unleash the Inferno

4 Reckoner Bankbuster

4 Ziatora's Proving Ground

4 Llanowar Wastes

4 Sulfurous Springs

4 Deathcap Glade

4 Haunted Ridge

1 Swamp

1 Forest

1 Takenuma, Abandoned Mire

1 Boseiju, Who Endures

2 Rockfall Vale

Sideboard

1 Duress

2 Dreams of Steel and Oil

1 Abrade

2 Go for the Throat

1 Infernal Grasp

3 Graveyard Trespasser // Graveyard Glutton

1 Cut Down

2 Pithing Needle

2 Riveteers Charm

Card Selection:

PREMIUM REMOVALS :

Unleash the inferno I think will do quite well with all the enchantments and artifacts in the meta right now. Hitting 2 birds with one stone always feel good.

Abrade is another early artifact/creature removal. The Brother's War expansion gave us bothersome artifacts both in utility and creatures so an early answer is a must.

Abrade for the artifacts. Go for the throat will answer the rest ^_^

Makes sure that most of the bothersome creatures and planeswalkers are gone for good.

BEST ENCHANTMENT IN THE FORMAT???

A. Makes a creature that creates a treasure whenever it attacks.

B. Card filtering

C. Makes a copy of a creature

All of those sound good to me so nothing more to say.

THE CREATURES:

Can you read all the text?? plus it's not legendary so REFLECTION OF KIKI JIKI can copy it. ^_^

It is EXPENSIVE and is a great blocker for its stats and casting cost.

UTILITY CARDS:

Invoke Despair is all over the meta. Nothing wrong with being prepared.

Card advantage is a must in the format and being able to attack for 4 damage isn't really that bad.

A. Disruption

B. Being able to tutor a card that you need

C. Bring back to life a creature from ANY graveyard

All part of the plan.

RESULTS:

This afternoon brought my deck to my LGS for an afternoon of MTG ( 1/ 7 / 2023). Davao Magic Shop's first STANDARD tournament of 2023. Finished 2nd to Mono Black Midrange. Here are the results (Special thanks to Jag of Monologue Aggro for breaking down this afternoon's meta):

R1 : vs. ESPER CONTROL (2-0)

R2 : vs. IZZET SPELLS (2-1)

R3 : vs. ESPER LEGENDS (2-1)

R4: vs. MONO BLACK MIDRANGE (1-1) - intentional draw

Overview:

Decided on this list because I think more people will gravitate to playing the top decks of the format which are Grixis Midrange, Mardu Midrange, and Mono White Midrange. I think this decklist will do fairly well against aggressive decks such as mono red or white and hopefully go over the top in the late game. Rakdos and Mono Black Midrange will also be a tough matchup because they can play aggro and the long game.

The Sideboard plan could have been better if the cards were available to me most notably an extra copy of BROTHERHOODS END in exchange for 1x of Riveteers Charm. Overall the deck played well against the field and will continue to tune it depending on the meta of DMS.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Hope to do more deck articles in the future. Have a great day everyone.
